• Curriculum by National Institute of Health
http://science-education.nih.gov/supplements/nih1/cancer/default.htm
• These enrichment modules are published by the National Institute of Health. Real-World
scenarios and the inquiry method are used to cover topics in biology. Students work in groups
to understand data and come to conclusions. These modules will provide a great supplement
to an independent study of Biology. You can read more about each of these modules at the
website listed.  The main focus of each section will be the module listed. However, there may be time at the end of each section for additional material. In that case I will use material from BSCS Curriculum Development
Cell Biology and Cancer has two objectives. The first objective is to introduce students to major concepts related to the development and impact of cancer. Today we have a picture of cancer that, while still incomplete, is remarkably coherent and precise. Cancer develops when mutations occur in genes that normally operate to control cell division. These mutations prompt the cell to divide inappropriately. Cancer-causing mutations can be induced by a wide variety of environmental agents and even several known viruses. Such mutations also can be inherited— thus, the observation that some families have a higher risk for developing cancer than others. We still have much to learn about cancer, to be sure, but the clarity and detail of our understanding today speak powerfully of the enormous gains scientists have made in just the last 30 years. One objective of this module is to help students catch a bit of the excitement of these gains.
• A second objective is to convey to students the relationship between basic biomedical research and the improvement of personal and public health. Cancer-related research has yielded many benefits for humankind. Most directly, it has guided the development of public health policies and medical interventions that today are helping us prevent, treat, and often, even cure cancer.

Central Europe + trip (year long)
Class starts at 9:15
Ages: 12 - 18 years old
Instructor: Freya Fitzpatrick
Email: FreyaFitzpatrick@gmail.com
Website: www.startlearning4life.com
Cost: $100 per session ; If registered after deadline: $110
Min/Max: maximum class size: approximately 15 students. 30 people can come on the trip. Number of students in class depends on the number of adults coming on the trip
Required Materials
: One tri-fold display board. One role of 3 ¼ inch adding machine paper . A book list will be supplied: Each student will select the books needed for his or her projects, presentations  and papers. Parents may buy these books, get them from the library or download them if available for download.
Parents participation:
If a parent wants to participate in the class or trip, there will be an additional fee to cover expenses.

• Year-long interdisciplinary course culminating in a 2-week trip to Germany, Poland and Czech Republic
• Ages: 12-18 years old. Twelve-year olds must be capable of early high-school level behavior and performance. Students 14 and older can (if parents want) travel under my chaperonage. Students 12-13 must have a parent or other responsible adult on the tripIn order for a child to go on the trip they must be enrolled in the class. This applies to siblings as well.
• The course can be taken as: a) an elective; b) an English course – lit or writing or both; c) a social studies course; d) an arts course. What I teach in class will remain the same no matter which option you choose. What will make the course fit one of these specific categories will be the type of assignments your children do. For instance, if they select the essay and research assignments, I will critique and coach their work based on writing criteria. (The literature and writing option would be best for students who have already taken my writing course this year.) I will provide a course description to meet whichever option you choose.
• The 2-week trip is worth a ½ credit and can also be used as a) an elective; b) a social studies course or c) an arts course.  I will provide a course description to meet whichever option you choose. To get ‘credit’ students will be expected to turn in a travelogue of their trip featuring arts, history, or whatever is appropriate for what they’re getting credit for.
• Cost of trip: approximately $2500 per person. We’ll travel by rail and other public transportation within Europe. We’ll stay mostly in hostels unless I find awesome deals on hotels, but really, hostels are a great cultural experience and usually you can prepare food in a communal kitchen which will keep food costs down. We’ll also probably spend 2-3 nights sleeping on trains–another cool cultural experience.
• Cultural exchange – students will be paired with a similarly aged pen-pal in at least one of the three countries we visit, and hopefully with a pen-pal in one city in each country. This will be arranged through friends of mine. The idea is that the kids will get to meet their pen-pals and do one or more of the following: attend a group get together with them, have their pen-pal as a guide for the day, eat or stay-over at the pen-pal’s house.
• Touring – the trip is intended as an educational trip, not a vacation. I will try to be reasonable – my family says I’m very unreasonable when it comes to learning and touring. They call me the blitzkrieg tour guide. The point of mentioning this is that parents and students on the trip need to be prepared to keep up an energetic pace for 2 weeks. I plan for us to visit 9-10 towns in two weeks, which means about 1 town per day, which means lots of paying attention and being mentally on task. If everyone really wants, I can cut it down to 6-7 towns in two weeks, but to my way of thinking, if you’re spending all that money to go to Europe, why not see as much as you can? You can come back and sleep for a month!

Min/Max:  8/15
Required Materials: $5 for script

This is a two-session commitment!  Students will audition, rehearse and put on a production at the end of Session 4.  This year's play is Not-so-Grimm Tales by Kevin Bean.  Here’s a hilarious tongue-in-cheek retelling of classic Grimm fairy tales that feels fresh and contemporary! A working mother notices her daughter has picked up some not-so-great lessons from the fairy tales she’s been reading, so she sits her down and tells her new, more modern and empowering versions of some of the classics. In Mom’s new and improved variations, Little Red is an animal rights activist and vegetarian who saves the wolf from the Woodsman; Snow White unionizes the dwarves and overthrows her beauty pageant loving stepmother along with her assistant, Mir’ah; and Cinderella shares her love of angst-filled poetry with Charming and they run off together to live the lives of Bohemian artists.

Literature – British Lit (year long course)
Ages: high school level
Instructor: Freya Fitzpatrick
Email: FreyaFitzpatrick@gmail.com
Website: www.startlearning4life.com
Cost: $100 per session; If registered after deadline: $110
Min/Max: 5/10
Required Materials:  A book list will be provided once a student registers.  There are 12 novels. Parents may purchase books or download them if available for download.  Books must be in a format that can be brought to class and which can be marked or highlighted.

• The purpose of this class is to provide students with a secure understanding of British literature. Students will read, discuss, and write about the Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, Elizabethan, Romantic, Victorian, and Modern periods. They will go beyond this, however, by analyzing the social, political, and religious influences that mark each period historically and affect literary style.Through class discussions and personal writing, students will establish their roles as critics, becoming conscious readers/writers. Texts used: 12 full-length British literature novels, and 3 collections of British poetry. Basis of grade: Average of grades on 15 essays.
• My approach to literature is to read. Read, read, read. I want kids to immerse themselves in books that are well-known classics of specific eras. They will of course learn the appropriate analysis skills of literature, but my belief about literature is that kids will learn more about the world, about ideas and about literature by actually reading, getting wrapped up in a book, rather getting bogged down in excruciating nit-picking at books. So, students will read two-three full novels per 8-week session. They can read via books-on-CD. Some people really benefit from hearing rather than just reading a book. Class time will be spent on vocabulary development, historical and cultural background on specific works and on analysis skills.

Romeo & Juliet

by William Shakespeare
Shakespeare’s classic takes a decidedly contemporary twist as Georgia Shakespeare places the timeless drama in a modern high school setting. The Capulets and the Montagues become archrival high schools making the drama and situations feel like they have been torn from the morning newspaper. Add in a contemporary urban score and some “in your face” stage combat; this presentation of Shakespeare’s classic will resonate with students in a new and thrilling way!
