In this class, students will study human anatomy. A multi-disciplinary approach will be used that will help the student to build excellent observation and critical thinking skills. We will utilize large mammal organs such as cow eyes, livers and brains to help us explore the functions of human anatomy. The students will see how small details fit in context with the big picture, which will give understanding and meaning to what we are studying. This class will be a mixture of teaching, dissection and observation (through our museum field trip).
At the end of the quarter, we will take a field trip to the Bodies Exhibit in Atlanta. Museum Admission is included in the class fee.

In this class, students will work in pairs to study and dissect 6 specimens. Specimens to be studied include a worm, a grass hopper, a frog, chicken wing/leg (for muscle study) a fetal pig and an owl pellet. Students will study approximately one animal a week. More time will be spent dissecting the more complex life forms.
Each class will start with a study of the animal’s anatomy, what makes that animal unique and how his unique features enable him to thrive in his environment. What is learned during the dissection will help the student to make logical connections between an animal’s anatomy/ physiology and the world that it lives in.
They also will be learning about the scientific method and how to document their findings in a lab research notebook.

This is a two-session commitment! Students will audition, rehearse and put on a production at the end of Session 4. This year's play is Not-so-Grimm Tales by Kevin Bean. Here’s a hilarious tongue-in-cheek retelling of classic Grimm fairy tales that feels fresh and contemporary! A working mother notices her daughter has picked up some not-so-great lessons from the fairy tales she’s been reading, so she sits her down and tells her new, more modern and empowering versions of some of the classics. In Mom’s new and improved variations, Little Red is an animal rights activist and vegetarian who saves the wolf from the Woodsman; Snow White unionizes the dwarves and overthrows her beauty pageant loving stepmother along with her assistant, Mir’ah; and Cinderella shares her love of angst-filled poetry with Charming and they run off together to live the lives of Bohemian artists.
In this class, students will work in pairs to study and dissect 7 specimens. Specimens to be studied include a perch, squid, shark, clam, starfish, crayfish and sponge. Students will study approximately one animal a week. More time will be spent dissecting the more complex marine life.
Each class will start with a study of the animal’s anatomy, what makes that animal unique and how his unique features enable him to thrive in his environment. What is learned during the dissection will help the student to make logical connections between an animal’s anatomy/ physiology and the world that it lives in.

These math lessons also develop knowledge of space science. We will discover how astronomers use pi to determine the size and distance of heavenly objects, investigate radian angles, visual acuity and parallax, build an ancient navigational instrument. This book is produced in partnership with NASA to inform students about the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope (formerly called GLAST), launched in June 2008.
Exposure to the most common works of William Shakespeare in a fun, non-intimidating, setting.
The class will cover A Midsummer's Night Dream, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Much to Do About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet and more. The class will include period history, a synopsis of literary types (stories, bards, puns, sonnets, types of poetry etc.) along with some acting out of scenes, oral presentation and appropriate period crafts. We will study the workings of the Globe Theatre and compare and contrast theater life now and back then. There will be some special units on Elizabethan costume and a field trip planned to Georgia Shakespeare homeschool day.
Students will gain insights into Shakespeare’s life and work such as the influence of the Elizabethan age on his writing, his usage of language, his best-known dramas and sonnets, common Shakespearean themes, and his performances at the Globe Theatre.
The “follow-along” at home can be in any form, abridged, audio, pictorial, video or even movie format of the work we are focusing on. Students will be given a bound journal to record their pictures, thoughts and feeling on the works we study. This will be an immersion/exposure class, reading the full works will be optional.
The field trip cost will be $10-20 dollars per child depending on if you choose to do 1 or 2 sessions.
We will be registering for the field trip early to assure our spots. The field trip will be open to friends and family.
Romeo & Juliet
by William Shakespeare
Shakespeare’s classic takes a decidedly contemporary twist as Georgia Shakespeare places the timeless drama in a modern high school setting. The Capulets and the Montagues become archrival high schools making the drama and situations feel like they have been torn from the morning newspaper. Add in a contemporary urban score and some “in your face” stage combat; this presentation of Shakespeare’s classic will resonate with students in a new and thrilling way!
