SCIENCE FAIR

GA-EPH would like to invite homeschoolers K-12 to participate in our first Science Fair on February 18th.  Students will present their projects to other homeschoolers and adults.  Projects will be graded on a rubric.

Each entry needs to follow the scientific method; a clear question most be posed, a hypothesis stated and experimentally tested, and a conclusion made based on the results.  Please note each project must be based on an experiment conducted by the student and not a summary report on a topic.  Please see the attached file for a brief description of the scientific method.

Each project display must clearly present the question/problem to be tested, the hypotheses, the experiment procedure and results, and the conclusion. For younger students-these sections can be kept very simple.  For older students-it is suggested that they also include an abstract, introduction, graphs, etc.  Please follow the attached “The Project Report” for ideas.  Portions of the report can be displayed on a presentation board.

The web is full of creative ideas of testable questions and experiments. Encourage your child to pick a fun experiment.  The Science Fair is a great way to get students excited about science and practice presentation skills.

Participation awards will be given to all students.  Entry fee is $3 for GA-EPH members and $4 for other homeschoolers.

For more information, please contact our Science Fair coordinators-Suzanne Dawson- dawsonhousehold@comcast.net or Melinda Delisle-Clark- birthofafamily@comcast.net.   Please complete the online field trip/events form to register each student.

The States of Matter module focuses on the properties of the three states of matter – gas, liquid, and solid. A series of demonstrations are performed in order to reinforce and illustrate these concepts. The level of the discussion is tailored to the age and background of each class.

In one demonstration dry ice is used to illustrate the change between a solid and a gas without passing through the liquid state; a process known as sublimation. In another demonstration a non-Newtonian substance known as an obleck is used as an example of a substance which has both the properties of a solid and a liquid. Students are allowed to play with the obleck to observe both properties. Various liquids layered in clear beakers are used to illustrate the property of density. A demonstration of the change in properties of substances at extremely low temperatures using liquid Nitrogen is always a hit, and is usually done at the conclusion of the module. Unfortunately, no one but the Bio-Bus staff may handle the liquid Nitrogen.
